Zurich in 1 Day – The Perfect Itinerary

May 2025 · 6 min read

Zurich is one of Europe's most livable cities — compact, walkable, with extraordinary water, architecture, and food. And while a single day can't do it full justice, it's more than enough to fall in love with it. Here's how to spend 24 hours in Zurich well.

💡 Zürich Card tip: If you're visiting as a tourist, the Zürich Card gives you free public transport, free museum entry, and boat rides. Available at the airport and main station for 1 or 3 days.

Morning · 9:00 AM
Old Town (Altstadt) & Grossmünster

Start at Zurich Hauptbahnhof and walk south along the Limmat into the Old Town. The narrow cobblestone streets of the Altstadt are Zurich at its most picturesque — medieval guild houses, hidden courtyards, and café terraces. Don't miss Niederdorfstrasse, the main pedestrian street on the east bank. Climb to Lindenhof Hill for the best panoramic view over the rooftops and the river. Then visit Grossmünster, the Romanesque cathedral where Zwingli launched the Swiss Reformation — climb the tower for views over the whole city.

Late Morning · 11:00 AM
Fraumünster & the Lakefront

Cross the river to see Fraumünster, famous for its stunning Chagall stained glass windows — five enormous windows in the choir depict scenes from the Old and New Testaments in vivid blues and reds. Then walk south along Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich's famous shopping street, down to Bürkliplatz and the lakefront. On Saturday mornings there's a wonderful farmers' market here.

Afternoon · 1:00 PM
Lake Zurich

Have lunch at one of the lake promenade restaurants, then take a boat cruise on Lake Zurich — short trips depart every hour and on a clear day the Alpine panorama is breathtaking. Alternatively, rent a SUP board and paddle yourself. The lake is swimmable from June and the public Badis (swimming areas) at Utoquai and Seebad Enge are free or very cheap.

Late Afternoon · 4:00 PM
Limmat Böötle (if the timing works!)

If you're visiting in summer and can spare 3-4 hours, the Limmat Böötle is one of the most uniquely Zürich experiences you can have. Rent an inflatable ring or boat from Smile Swim at Wipkingerweg 6 and drift 7 km down the river to Glanzenberg. The train back takes 20 minutes. It sounds like a lot but it's the perfect lazy afternoon.

Dinner & Drinks

Zurich West (Zürich West / Hardbrücke area) is the city's most vibrant evening district — converted industrial buildings now house excellent restaurants, cocktail bars, and the famous Frau Gerolds Garten open-air bar with food stalls. For something more traditional, try fondue in the Old Town or a Züri Gschnätzlets (Zurich-style sliced veal with Rösti) at any Beiz in the Niederdorf.
